In this mini-lesson from Mystery Science, the host, Doug, introduces students to the relationship between bones, tendons, and muscles, as he explores the mechanics behind moving limbs (fingers, arms, legs, mouth, etc.). To better engage audiences, he opens up the discussion by comparing moving limbs between humans and robots and challenging participants to consider similarities in the structures involved. Using materials found around the home (including a printable template), students are given clear and concise instructions on how to construct a ‘moving’ finger of their own (through the mechanism of pulling a ‘string’ or tendon to control the movement of the joints). This activity is both hands-on and minds-on as it takes participants on a journey of understanding the basics behind the movement of the human body.
