In this activity from Mystery Science, students develop an understanding of the relationship between the Earth’s orbital movement around the sun and the visibility of constellations in the sky. This resource provides multiple videos with background information using animations, photos, and voice-overs, along with step by step instruction as participants construct their own ‘Universe in a Box,’ where they can revolve the Earth around the Sun to determine which constellations are visible throughout the year. Not only are the instructions clear and concise, but also the activity uses materials that are relatively accessible at home (3 printable templates are required). With the hands-on element of constructing the universe along with the minds-on approach with answering critical thinking questions, this activity meets its learning objectives while engaging audiences.
