JPL offers this activity providing students with an experiential introduction to the engineering design process as they are tasked with creating a freestanding structure that will sustain the weight of a marshmallow only using (uncooked) spaghetti and tape. While clear and concise instructions are provided, the 18-minute challenge is rather loosely structured and is intended to function as a precursor to a comprehensive lesson on the engineering design process. Nonetheless, background information and discussion questions are still included to ensure participants meet the learning objectives. For this activity, the reviewer substituted skewer sticks for the spaghetti and a Keurig cup for the marshmallow and it worked just fine.
