Mystery Science offers this activity that allows students to develop an understanding of the proportional differences between freshwater, frozen freshwater, and saltwater on the Earth by using approximations on a map. An intriguing story about a fisherman lost at sea for over a year hooks audiences in as they begin to consider how much water on the planet is used to sustain life. This resource provides a myriad of learning opportunities from the availability of freshwater to the role of water in everyday activities to using math to make approximations utilizing a grid rendered map of the Earth. While a printable template is required to interpret the grid map and answer supplemental questions, Mystery Science grants participants the option to use a student editable version that can be completed online without having to print anything (a plus for homes without printer access).
