In this activity, students discover how whales (and similar aquatic animals) keep warm in wet and cold environments. This resource offers definitions and brief explanations to describe the function of blubber and provides clear and concise instructions to simulate natural insulation. For the most part, the materials can be found around the home; however, for vegetable shortening, butter or margarine may be substituted in its place. While this activity is hands-on and engaging for younger audiences, it is recommended that the experiment be completed outdoors with parent/guardian support in order to minimize messes and spills. As a recommendation, students should try experimenting with other materials (cotton, fabric, sand, etc.) to compare and contrast the effectiveness of different insulation mediums.
