PBS offers this fun and engaging activity where students learn about thrust as a force that pushes objects forward as they are tasked to build their own 2-wheel balloon car. This resource provides an instructional video with step by step directions and accompanying photos. Several of the materials can be found at home with the exception of the rounded candy mints (cardboard wheels were substituted for this review and worked out fine), and minimal parent/guardian support is needed. Not only are students engaged in this hands-on activity, but also they are tasked with using the engineering design process to improve their model (reducing friction and mass, repositioning of the axel, etc.). In addition, this resource supports English Language Learners as the instructions are available in English and Spanish.
