This activity is certainly going to get very messy, so make sure it is done in an area you won’t mind having a big powdery mess. This is a great activity that allows students to see exactly how craters are formed on the mood and other planets. Unfortunately, the recommended video is of very poor quality, but engaging and very informative. The video presents exactly how the activity should be performed, including the proper scientific protocol for recording and analyzing the data and results of the experiment. We can include more variation into the activity by using different, even larger balls as well, or even by using sand instead of flour to mimic the surface of other planets. The resource should include discussion questions or extensions that take the activity beyond its current scope.
