Wat-er you Making!
I have done this activity numerous times with my science club over zoom. For materials, I encourage my students to make this into an engineering project. Challenge them to design a filter using materials they have at home. This can include plastic cups, cotton balls, beads, small toys, toothpicks, Q-Tips, marbles, and paper towels. My Students of all ages loved the challenge of planning and testing their DIY filter.
A modification you can choose to make is to use a cheap cooking spice(turmeric/cinnamon) or tea to make your water "dirty". If desired, the participants can now drink the water before and after filtering to see if there's a difference in sight, and taste!! I would highly recommend this potable project.
