Science Buddies offers this activity to help students determine if the melting of the Northern and Southern polar ice caps contributes to rising sea levels. While this activity does introduce students to a relevant concern for many scientific communities, the execution is somewhat challenging if you are limited on resources (molding clay, materials for molding clay substitute, etc.). With the proper materials, students do have the opportunity to see the impacts of melting ice on the water levels relative to a 'body of land.' This activity empowers participants to build the models and take data, however adult support is necessary for setup, measurements, clean-up, and explanation of the findings between both sets of samples.

This is an enjoyable and engaging activity to learn about the sea levels rising at the North and South Poles. It may seem challenging at first as it is designed to be a science project. The quality of the content is organized and in-depth.

This is a great lesson by Science Buddies that lays out the groundwork for an experiment that perfectly exemplifies the effects of the Northern and Southern polar ice caps melting. The experiment itself is fairly straightforward and simple as you wait for ice to melt, but it does include the option of creating your own play-dough which makes the activity a bit more fun and engaging. The background information given is a bit lengthy but could be made to be more engaging and intriguing if interpreted and presented in a different setting, such as a classroom. Overall, this lesson has great potential and educational content, but may need the help of enthusiastic adult guidance to keep a child's interest.

This is a good activity, but probably for older elementary students. For younger students, the science should be local and within their control. This activity has a more global view.

The experiment is a very visual representation of how water levels rising vary between the north and south pole. I did the experiment with making the dough at home instead of just using Play-Doh. I would definitely recommend using Play-Doh if you have it. It would have made the experiment a lot easier and probably would have made the "South Pole" part a lot more precise.
