The activity is straightforward and supplements the featured science concept very well. The participants basically mimic and imitate different types of birds with different beaks, which is a great way to reinforce the concept or topic being presented. With some very enthusiastic participants, this activity is sure to get messy and hectic, so be sure to set some rules such as: no touching or moving the “food” plate, or no moving the “food” away from another player. If there are additional participants, one player could use the index finger and thumb as a “generalist beak”. This activity could take things further by having the participants record the results to see if certain beaks are generally best for picking certain foods. I believe the activity would also do well to include follow-up questions to help evaluate the participants’ learning, including sections like, “Ask yourself this:…”
