In this activity from JPL, students investigate changing states of matter as they manipulate conditions in a glass cup to create a ‘cloud.’ This resource provides meaningful background information behind changing states of matter in the environment (specifically the atmosphere), and shares clear and concise instructions with images on how to make a cloud using materials around the home. In this project, ash from a lit match is used in place of dust, therefore close adult supervision is required for safety purposes. In addition, there is an explanation at the end connecting the learning to everyday life, making this a valuable lesson for students to better understand changing states of matter as it relates to weather and climate.
