Kids love to make sound. This activity helps them visualize the sounds they make and lets them start thinking about the properties of sound. On the surface, it seems like a simple activity, but it is a great platform to be able to plan and carry out investigations about sound. The materials needed are easy to find and reuse many times. The video “Sound Waves” linked to this activity introduces how an objects size and shape is going to affect the reaction or dance that the salt does when exposed to a sound. You can have your child select containers of varying sizes to see how the each material has its own unique vibrating frequency. Encourage your child to write their discoveries in a notebook and think about why the reaction of the salt changes. You can also make your own instruments and see what materials create the best vibrations.
