The title of this activity really drew me in. Making a levitating orb sounded really cool. The resource site has excellent instructions in both video and text to explain how to make the orb. It also features a PDF that you can download that offers a balloon substitute for the PVC pipe. The tricky material to get a hold of is the tinsel. I decided to do some research and discovered that tinsel is coated with Mylar. You can find Mylar in metallic balloons or in a regular chip bag. Removing the colorful portion of the chip bag leaves you with a shiny material that you can cut thinly and fashion into the orb. It took me some time to get it just right but my orb did levitate! If you want better results I would suggest bookmarking this activity and return to it closer to the winter holidays or ordering the tinsel directly from the site.
