Devon

This science project is part video lesson, and part interactive “worksheet” activity. I love how easy this activity is, (no parental help required. The video goes step by step, telling the kids what to do) but I also love how informative it is. The science content is amazing, and does a great job at teaching kids the importance of observing physical traits and behaviors when it comes to classifying animals. It is a great introduction to the fundamentals of basic taxonomy. Printer required.

As a teacher, I am a huge fan of Mystery Science. The supplies are all very easy to come by. If you are accessing this at home, you will need a printer. But for distance Learning purposes, this could be something that the teacher could print out or even recreate on a Google Document. The narrator is highly engaging and the details and instructions are very user friendly. Do I recommend this? Absolutely. I feel it would be especially engaging to mid elementary aged students, but still accessible for lower elementary.

Pros: Video lesson provides background, key concepts, instructional narration and question prompts. The learning is curated by the video. No requirement for reading the learning concepts makes this a good activity for early readers. Provides active learning opportunities. Overall key impression: Activity provides video lesson on animal taxonomy and is engaging. The video narrator provides the teaching and curate the learning Cons: A printer is required. Activity is best when two or more children are involved or a child with a parent.

Videos are a great way to provide visual and auditory learners the opportunity to learn about animals. It was great that it also had questions so students could dig a little deeper.
